One month ago I finalized my studies in Radboud University Nijmegen I am officially a MSc. Biomedical Sciences with a specialization in Health Technology Assessment and with a Consultancy profile. This is the best decision I have ever made in my life, and I cannot be more proud of myself for it. I came here with nothing but a dream and I really hoped this could be the place where I could start over again. I was afraid everyday thinking I didn’t know what I was doing, but even when fear stayed for a long time I could start dealing with it doing what I needed to do in order to get my Master’s degree. This life experience was very difficult and I felt incapable of succeeding most of the times. Fortunately, this was just an intrusive thought, I was capable and I am capable for the future challenges that life will give me.For personal reasons I couldn’t post this before, but now a month ago from this important event I only want to say thank you to everyone that helped me, that supported me, that trusted me and relied on me. I couldn’t have done it without my mentors Rob Reuzel and wietske kievit, the amazing support of International Office or RadboudUM and the continuous support of my loving parents and my now husband Christian Niemeijer I couldn’t be prouder, happier and more excited than I am right now for the new upcoming beginnings and challenges of my life. Thank you so much to everyone and everything went through for this big achievement.

After returing from Monash University, Australia in Dec 2015, I realised that it has been 4.5 years in PhD, I had no publications, not even in a conference. Already, I had got 3-4 rejections from different journals for my major work in PhD. My fellowship was terminated due to no satisfactory progress as per my guides and I was primarily dependent on my savings to support me and my family. I was having serious health issues like multiple joint stiffness and persistent pain throughout the day. In addition, I had to undergo ear surgery due to mid ear infection. On top of this, I was facing rejections for an postdoc or job applications. Although, these situations just provide a glimpse of the few challenges encountered during my PhD, I know some individuals who faced much worse situation in their PhD than me.In spite of being in such soup, I never lost hope and worked continuously. I had a believe that every thing would improve one day and I need just 1 opportunity/result in my favor. I am a firm believer that sometime when stars are not in favor, one should work slowly and steadily without thinking much about the outcome. One can wait patiently and persevere through that period till your turn come (Apna time aayega). As an analogy, one should learn to leave bouncers and difficult balls in cricket and remain on the pitch, waiting for one good ball in your favor ( Movie- MS Dhoni)Fortunately, my first conference publication got accepted in SPIE proceedings and it filled me with hope that things are going to change from now onwards. Slowly and steadily, things started turning in my favor like I got my 1st journal paper accepted, applied for patent, got best innovator award at a conference, gave my synopsis and submitted my thesis, etc. All these happend within an year. Although, new challenges continued poping up in my life but these few good events filled me with positivity. Over the years, these challenges have shaped me in a person who I am today. If you are also facing challenges, do not give up. Keep working to sharpen your skill, attitude, character and have patience till you too get that single opportunity. However, whenever you get such opportunity, use it to your full potential in your favor and leave no room/reason to miss that opportunity.#PhD #research #scholars #lifelessons

🔬 Thrilled to share the latest breakthrough from Ju Lab at the University of Sydney! Our latest study, led by first author Yunduo Charles Zhao, introduces a Vein-Chip platform for modeling cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST). 🧠With a focus on COVID-19 vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia, the Vein-Chips replicate CVST vascular anatomy and hemodynamic profiles. 💉These personalized Vein-Chips, drew inspiration from the traditional Chinese movable type methodology, developed through a cost-effective technique, allow in-vitro thrombosis assays, revealing distinct scenarios between normal and dysfunctional endothelial conditions. 🙌🏻The findings promise improved CVST management and prevention. 🤩Grateful for the opportunity to contribute to impactful studies like this under the guidance of A/Prof Lining Arnold Ju. The close collaboration with Ju Lab has been instrumental in shaping my research skills, and I’m excited to continue this journey as a research assistant and a Snow Medical Fellowship Program trainee during my gap year. 👩🏻🔬Looking forward to making meaningful contributions to the team! 🚀 #Research #Science #Teamwork[Link to the article: https://lnkd.in/gWyUuYpY]

🎓 Celebrating a Journey of Perseverance and Achievement 🌍 (A Thread)I am filled with utmost gratitude and appreciation to finally call myself a “Biomedical Engineer” after 5 years of focus, perseverance and resilience through the numerous challenges I faced while pursuing this milestone. I'm excited to share my story with you, a story that taught me the importance of never giving up, never making decisions out of desperation, and following my passions no matter what. From a younger age, I have always had significant interest in building the bridges between theoretical understanding and practical applications. I found medicine fascinating (I still do) and wanted to become a doctor, but I did not like the idea of shadowing the “engineering side of me” that I saw (I still see) very huge potential in. In my second year of high school where the pressure to decide on what to pursue after completion began to rise, I decided to embark on an intensive research on programs that could provide me with the opportunity to apply engineering principles to medicine. That is when stumbled upon a rapidly emerging field of science and engineering namely; “Biomedical Engineering”. I was utterly captivated and immediately knew I was going to do anything to study this program. Fast forward after completion of high school with very good grades, things did not go as planned. I applied for the Biomedical engineering program in a university with a couple other classmates who also found the course amusing. I was however rejected for reasons not known to me till date, and was offered a place in computer science instead. Even though I felt like my dream was gradually seeming distant, I did not give in to desperation. I rejected the offer to study computer science and decided to stay at home that year, which I actually thought was a “stupid” idea, but did it anyway. “Why don’t I just accept the computer science offer? It is afterall a booming field which most people are dying to get into.” - I said to myself. While I appreciated the opportunity, my heart was set on Biomedical Engineering. It was very tough seeing my friends start college while I remained at home, feeling anxious and stressed.[Continuation]==>👇 👇 👇 👇 👇 👇 #focus #Perseverance #Passion #BiomedicalEngineering #DreamsDoComeTrue #GraduationDay #medtech #determination #hardwork

This great initiative makes me recall a conversation I had with a family member during Christmas in 2009 (I remember the year because we expected our first child 😊). At that time, I was only just starting my journey into academia…We discussed the competitive nature and need for “sharp elbows” in academia, and whether it is possible to have a career in academia without having to deal with this. My somewhat naïve approach was that “it must be different in health/rehabilitation science”, since the Race to Discovery could only be less dominant in such a complex scientific field where teamwork and collaboration is a must, and patents are rarely the goal. From multiple discussions with friends from a variety of different research disciplines during the years, I still believe that being in health science offers something different from the “standard” competitive research environment, at least when compared to some other disciplines. Is there room for improvement? Certainly…! To me, kindness and propriety are core values in all aspects of life and something to strive for. Hopefully this initiative will help us all create awareness about this, not only in research training, but across the life in academia.

The Life Science industry needs to improve accessibility. It seems we‘re often perpetuating existing inequalities created by a lack of accessibility. In many cases, life science education is not particularly accessible and although this seems to get better, instruments and systems used in the lab are lagging behind.I think it‘s important to develop instruments and software that can be used by all researchers and scientists. It feels like a daunting task to go beyond web accessibility checklists but it is necessary. I recently learnt about the Accessible Biomedical Immersion Laboratory (ABIL) located at Purdue’s Discovery Learning Research Center. I love that they have a 3-D virtual environment that allowed me to explore the lab and compare to the labs I‘ve worked in. Change towards more accessible life science laboratories is happening and I‘m looking forward to learn more and figure out how to make this aspect more prominent in new product development.
